Cowgirl Thrower, Kate Burton Earns Academic All-District VII Honors

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Kate Burton, a senior on the UW track and field team was named to the ESPN the Magazine Second Team Academic All-District VII as presented by CoSIDA on Thursday.

The ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team is a part of the Academic All-America program. Student-athletes are selected in voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA District VII is made up of the states of Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Burton, a native of Vancouver, Wash., and a Clark Junior College transfer recently placed second in the hammer throw at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet and qualified for the NCAA Championships June 11-14 in Des Moines, Iowa. Kate this year set the Wyoming record in the hammer with her Olympic Trial Qualifying throw of 209' 8". She was also the conference champion in both the hammer throw and the indoor 20lb weight throw. She is studying mechanical engineering and carries a 3.35 grade point average and was selected to the All-MWC academic team in 2007.

To qualify, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and must be at least a sophomore and must have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's games.
