Emily Higgins, a junior on the University of Wyoming track and field team was named to the ESPN the Magazine Second Team Academic All-District VII as presented by CoSIDA on Thursday.
The ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team is a part of the Academic All-America program. Student-athletes are selected in voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA District VII is made up of the states of Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Higgins, a native of Deaver, Wyo., recently competed in the NCAA Midwest Regional meet in Norman, Okla., where she placed 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. This season she set the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in her very first time competing in the event. The next week she broke her own record and continued her dominance in the event as she took the title at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Laramie in late May.
Higgins is studying Kinesiology and Health Promotion and carries a 3.95 grade point average into her senior year. She has also been selected to the MWC All-Academic team her freshman and sophomore years as well as being named a Scholar Athlete.
To qualify, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of 3.20 cumulative grade-point average, must be at least a sophomore and must have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's games.
