University of Wyoming senior track andfield and cross country athlete Joel Hess has been named to the 2003 VerizonAcademic All-American team. He has been selected to the First Team in thetrack and field/cross country category. Hess is one of only 17 athletes toreceive First Team honors. It is the first Academic All-American honors forHess.
A native of Glendale, Wisc., Hess earned a perfect 4.0 cumulative gradepoint average this year in exercise and sports science. He has received manyaccolades for his hard work in the classroom during his career at UW. He isa two-time Academic All-Mountain West Conference selection and has twicebeen honored as a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete.
On the track, Hess has been one of the top distance runners for the Pokesover the last few seasons. This past season, he recorded the best Cowboytime in the 10,000 meter run clocking in at 34:35.76. He also placed seventhin the event at the 2003 Mountain West Conference Track and FieldChampionships in May.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selectsVerizon Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women'svolleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women'sbasketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women'strack & field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large. A firstteam, second team and third team are selected in both the University(Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.
