UW's Smith Ranks Sixth In The U.S. Heading Into Olympic Trials

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Cowgirl junior Shauna Smith is oneof the worlds fastest competitors in the 400 meter hurdles accordingto the United States Track and Field's website, www.ustaf.com.

Smith, a native of Sheridan, Wyo., currently boasts the sixth fastesttime by an American this year with her performance of 55.54 on June12, which placed her third at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and FieldChampionships in Austin, Texas. According to the recent topperformance list from the International Association of AthleticFederations, www.iaaf.com, Smith's time ranks 17th in the world.

Fellow Cowgirl Jessica Fox, from Burns, Wyo., ranks 28th in thecountry in the women's 400 meter dash with her performance of 52.39at the Mountain West Conference Championships in May.

Smith and Fox will head to the 2004 United States Olympic TeamTrials, July 9-18 in Sacramento, Calif.
