LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming track and field program has had a strong group of successful horizontal jumpers over the last ten years, including UW Hall of Famer Quincy Howe, Mervin Swaby, Blake Jackson, John Alderson, current senior Jeremiah James, and now newcomer Lenyn Leonce is positioning himself to be the next big name in that lineage.
Fresh off a Mountain West Conference (MWC) long jump title in his freshman year, the Castries, St. Lucia product has been selected as a member of the St. Lucia National Junior Track and Field Team. He will participate in the Central American and Caribbean Games (CACGs) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on July 2-4. He will be competing in the long jump.
"This is a great opportunity for Lenyn to represent his home country, as well as the University of Wyoming on an international stage," UW jumps coach Quincy Howe said. "It is not often that our athletes get this opportunity, so when the chance arises, it is good that they take it. This experience will go a long way in Lenyn's development and I look forward to it helping him mature and progress to a well-seasoned competitor at the NCAA level."
The CACGs are a multi-sport regional championships event, held quadrennial (every four years), typically in the middle (even) year between Summer Olympics. The Games are for countries in Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda, and the South American countries of Surinam, Guyana, Colombia and Venezuela.
Leonce's college marks from the 2009-10 season pre-qualified him for the junior national team, although he did participate in St. Lucia's national trials this past weekend, placing fourth with a leap of 21' 8.25". The event was equivilant to a fitness test to ensure that he was ready and healthy.
Should Leonce have a favorable result at the CAC meet, he could qualify for the World Junior meet in Moncton, Canada later this summer.
Leonce, who will be a sophomore for the `Pokes in 2010-11, is coming off of a fantastic rookie year at the collegiate level. He was the 2010 MWC outdoor champion in the long jump with a mark of 24' 10.5". That leap was the fourth best long jump in Cowboy history. Leonce also placed second in the long jump, behind only his teammate James, at the 2010 MWC Indoor Championships and 21st at the recent West Region NCAA Outdoor Preliminary meet.
