LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Former University of Wyoming standout Shauna Smith advanced Friday to the 400-meter hurdle finals at the 2005 USA Track and Field Championships, in Carson Calif.
Smith, a Sheridan, Wyo. native, finished second in her heat with a time of 55.38 behind Sheena Johnson of Nike. Her time gives her the fourth fastest time heading into Saturday's finals. If the 2005 NCAA 400-meter hurdle National Champion finishes in the top three in the finals, she will make the USA team for the following season. Her race is set for 1:50 p.m. (P.S.T.).
Fox, of Burns, Wyo., came up just one spot short of making Saturday's finals. To make the finals she had to place in the top four in your heat or have the fastest time of the nonqualifiers. The2005 All-American's time of 52.82 was good enough for fifth place in her heat, therefore she needed to have a faster time than the fifth place finisher in the other heat. Stephanie Smith of South Carolina was the fifth place finisher in that heet with a time of 52.73, leaving Fox nine hundreths from making the finals.
"Jessica was right there," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "She finished strong down the stretch, but unfortunately came just a little bit short."
Herl, a native of Hays, Kan., was unable to mark in the hammer throw finals. He strained his back on his first throw and was unable to get in a rhythm after that.
