Cowgirl juniors Jessica Fox and Shauna Smith will each try to earn a trip to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece when they compete at the U.S. Olympic Team trials in Sacramento, Calif., July 9-18.
Fox, a Burns, Wyo. native, is scheduled to battle with the nation's best 400 meter runners on Monday, July 12th. She is currently ranked 28th in the U.S. with her performance of 52.39 seconds at the Mountain West Conference Championships in May. She will need to finish in the top six in Sacramento in order to make the U.S. Olympic Team. At the 2003 U.S. Track and Field Championships last season, Fox placed eighth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.92, the best time of her career.
Smith, from Sheridan, Wyo., is scheduled to compete in the quarterfinals of the 400 meter hurdles on Friday, July 9th. She currently boasts the seventh fastest time by an American this year with her performance of 55.54 on June 12, which placed her third at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas. According to the recent top performance list from the International Association of Athletic Federations, www.iaaf.org, her time ranks 22nd in the world.
Smith placed seventh in the event at last year's U.S. Track and Field Championships.
