LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming track and field athlete Afiya Walker has been selected to the Trinidad and Tobago under 23 national team and will represent her country at the NACAC (North America, Central America and Caribbean) Under 23 Championships July 9-11 in Miramar, Fla.
Walker, who is a native of St. Augustine, Trinidad, will be a senior on the Cowgirl track and field team this coming season. She earned her spot on the Trinidad and Tobago Under 23 National Team by running to a time of 54.67 in the 400-meter dash at the Trinidad Trials on June 26. In addition to competing in the 400-meter dash, she will be a member of the 4x400-meter relay.
"We are very proud of Afiya for this accomplishment and are excited she will be representing the University of Wyoming and her country on such a large scale", UW track and field coach Don Yentes said. "Afiya is actually relatively new to the 400-meter race and has only been running it for a little over a year. She has a great deal of potential and as she continues to gain more confidence in her abilities, I know she will take it to a whole new level."
This past spring, Walker's junior season came to an end at the West Region NCAA Preliminary Meet in Austin, Texas. At regionals, she ran to an 18th place finish in the 400-meter dash. She currently holds the second fastest time in Wyoming history in the event, a 52.93. She won the Mountain West Conference Title in the event during the 2010 indoor season and placed second in the event during the outdoor season.
