July 12, 2010

This past weekend, track and field athlete Afiya Walker represented both her home country of Trinidad and Tobago and the University of Wyoming in style at the NACAC (North America, Central America and Caribbean) Under 23 Championships in Miramar, Fla.

Walker, a native of St. Augustine, Trinidad, sprinted to a fourth place finish in the 400-meter dash this past Friday. She crossed the finish line in a time of 54.48.

"This is a heck of a finish for Afiya in a very tough meet", UW track and field coach Don Yentes said. "She has done a great job managing her fitness at this time of year and it is paying off. Now she is off to the CAC Senior Championships and hopefully she can continue improving."

Walker's next competition with the Trinidad and Tobago National Team will be the CAC (Central America and Caribbean) Senior Championships. That meet will be held July 17-August 1 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

Walker will be a senior on the Cowgirl track and field team this coming season.
