LARAMIE, Wyo. - Following a strong 2012 track and field season, the Wyoming men's and women's teams were equally successful with classwork as both squads were selected as United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches of America (USTFCCA) All-Academic teams, announced Thursday by the organization.
The Cowgirls were chosen by way of a 3.25 average team GPA, while the men's team was selected for its 3.23 average. Both squads earned the top GPA for the sport in the Mountain West.
Seven Wyoming student-athletes were individually honored as well. On the men's side, Nick Ekel, Greg Miller, Joe Plante and Garrett Zans were selected, while Ashley Hutchinson, Erin Kirby and Candace Wollert were chosen from the women's team. All seven of the UW honorees earned All-Mountain West accolades at the 2012 MW Outdoor Championships.
Seven Mountain West men's and women's track & field teams and 24 individuals were honored by the USTFCCCA. On the women's side, 17 MW student-athletes from six member institutions received All-Academic Team honors. For the men, seven individuals representing three MW institutions were named to the team.
Teams earn the distinction by carrying a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better. Individually, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; or for the outdoor season, participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships.
