HELSINKI, Finland -
Former University of Wyoming standout Shauna Smith came up short of qualifying for the 400-meter hurdle final round at the IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, on Thursday.
Only the top two from each heat and the two fastest times of the nonqualifiers would go on to the finals. The Sheridan, Wyo.native's time of 55.97 was only good enough for seventh place in her heat.
"There were a lot of other factors besides the weather," quoted Smith on the USA Track and Field web site. "I've been running since the beginning of January. I think my body is pretty tabbed out. But I'm so grateful to have this experience. This will not be my last team. Expect a lot of good things from me. I'm a novice in this event. I have a lot to learn and lots of improvement. I see a lot of great things from me for years to come."
Americans Shandra Glover and Lashinda Demus both qualified for Saturday's final, while Yuliya Pechonkina of Russia heads into the final with the fastest qualifying time of 53.86.
Smith plans on taking a few months off before training again for next year's season.
