LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming head track & field head coach Don Yentes announced today the signing of Jacob Shanklin of Ellensburg, Wash., to a national letter of intent. He will fullfil his sophomore season at Spokane Falls Community College and come to Wyoming in the fall of 2006.

Shanklin was a Northwest Athletic Association Community College Conference Champion in the hammer throw last year as a freshman, which earned him Junior College All-American honors. He also was a major point contributor in the shot put and discus for his team and is one of the top returning hammer throwers in the nation at the Junior College level.

"I believe Jake is the top recruit in the nation in the hammer throw event without a doubt," said UW throws coach Paul Barrett. "What he did last year was very impressive in his first year in the hammer event and we are obviously excited to land this kind of elite talent to bolster our program right away.

"He has a great personality that fit in well with the rest of our crew here and comes from a very strong Junior College program that is known nationally each year."
