Taylor Kelting

Where is your favorite place to compete and why?
"I would have to say the University of Stanford. The atmosphere is unreal and most of the elite distance runners in the country show up. Plus you never see any palm trees in Wyoming."

What is your favorite distance to run and why?
"My favorite race is the 5000 because it's an endurance race, but it still requires foot speed."

Why are cross country runners nicknamed harriers?
"Have you ever seen Fox and the Hound? The pup on there is a Harrier... An England past time was to have the harriers "track" two people down, in a game known as Hunt the Hares. Anyway the hounds would run across the country, all out, for their trophy... Nothing would distract them from their goal, and they had a blast even if no one understood what or why they were running."

Do you have any weird routines before a race?
"I am always loosening and retying my laces in my spikes."

If you could add one obstacle to cross country what would it be?
"Fire hoses, it would make the sport way more challenging. Skinny runners getting thrown around by water pressure...maybe more people would show up to watch!"

When you are running, what do you think about?
"Most the time I really don't think about anything. During races I try to stay focused, except at our home XC meet. The swim team in their Speedo's had me laughing the whole time. I am pretty sure the other teams were scared to death!"

What is one thing people don't know about your hometown of Gillette, Wyoming?
"The wide variety of underground tunnels. It gets boring running on the surface all the time."

Do you load up on carbs before a race?
"Ya, I usually load up on lasagna or some type of pasta."

If you could compete in one other sport at the University of Wyoming, what would it be and why?
"I would have to say football, but I don't think a 150-pounder would survive too long out on the gridiron."

What are your plans after you graduate?
"Either coach track at the college level, or become a high school athletic director."

Have you ever intentionally pushed someone during a race?
"There are always elbows being thrown, but I have never had to push anybody or been pushed."

What's the weirdest thing that has happened in the beginning of a race when the group's all bunched up?
"At pre-nationals last year, during the race Seth Grossman was singing 'My Humps' by Black Eyed Peas."

What's the weirdest thing Coach Cole has ever yelled at you during a race?
"The only weird thing that he has yelled at me is 'Come on Poke, let 'er buck.'"

Do you ever write on your shoes? If so what do you write or what would you write if you don't?
"If I was going to write anything on my spikes, it would probably be 'stay tough'. Sometimes in races I can be a mental case."
