Two very young Wyoming cross countryteams opened up the 2001 season at home Friday afternoon as they hostedthe Wyoming Open Cross Country Meet at Jacoby Golf Course in Laramie.
Colorado State's men and women ran away with team titles with bothteams sweeping the first five individual positions. CSU's Bill Michelwon the men's 4-mile race with a time of 21:14. Marget Larson of CSUwon the women's 4-kilometer race with a time of 14:00.
As a team the Cowboys placed second behind CSU with 44 points. DenverUniversity placed third with 61 points. The Cowgirls finished fourthout of four teams with 87 points. Northern Colorado placed second andDenver University was third.
Wyoming's men were led by sophomore Justin Lambert-Belanger who placed13th with a time of 22:53. Other Cowboy finishers were freshman ShaneShatto (15th, 23:10), Senior Chris Jons (16th, 23:36), freshman ArteHuhn (22nd, 24:18), sophomore Kyle Johnson (27th, 25:13) and sophomoreNick Schabron (29th, 25:45).
The Cowgirls were paced by freshman Jennifer Thompson from Cheyenne,who placed 15th with a time of 15:41. The remainder of the finishersfor the Wyoming women were freshman Ashley Mecham (16th, 15:50),sophomore Jennifer Mansell (19th, 15:59), sophomore Leslie Jackson(23rd, 16:25), freshman Shannon Geslin (24th, 16:27), junior StephanieHanks (27th, 16:37), junior Shay Romine (34th, 17:28), freshman LeslieHayman (36th, 18:07) and freshman Jessica Johnson (37th, 18:37).
"I think we are still a lot better than what we showed today," saidWyoming head cross country coach Jim Sanchez. "With four days of formalpractice prior to today we looked a little rough but I feel we'll onlyget better and improve with each meet."
Wyoming next competes Sept. 7, at the Colorado State Open in FortCollins, Colo.
