COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Anticipating a strong start to the 2012 cross country season, multiple Cowboys and Cowgirls finished in the top 15 Saturday morning at the Rust Buster Invitational at Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs, Colo.

"I was pleased with the effort our teams put forth and glad that we were able to see ourselves in a competitive setting," said Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill. "It was a good season opener for us and we're excited to move forward."

In the women's 4k race, sophomore Holly Page led the Cowgirls with a second-place finish in 14:33.40 and was trailed closely by Devon England and Christine Nelson, who finished in sixth and seventh with respective times of 15:06.00 and 15:11.80.

Freshman Audra DeStefano arrived fourth for the Cowgirls in 11th place in 15:18.80, while senior Abi Bever placed 15th in 15:37. Jessica Lemaster (19th, 15:56), Catherine Cloetta (29th, 16:13), Courtney Madson (34th, 16:31) and Kyrsha Brisendine (38th, 16:40) also represented the program well.

"Holly had an amazing race and the team overall dominated the field," Berryhill said. "The girls ran hard and made a good effort to stay together, so I'm pleased with that in a season opener."

In the men's 6k race, redshirt freshman Aaron Derner finished first for the Cowboys with a third-place overall finish in 19:00.00. Junior Garrett Zans was in close pursuit with a sixth-place mark at 19:11.80 with freshman Mike Seas earning 11th place with a time of 19:25.60.

Senior Michael Banks earned a 13th-place finish in 19:28.20, while freshman Alex Pawlak was the fifth Cowboy crossing the finish line in 19:38.70. Junior Ken Lane competed well for the team, achieving a 23rd-place mark at 20:07.

"I thought Aaron and Garrett did a great job today in leading the team," Berryhill said. "I was most pleased with the overall team effort with the one-to-five runners coming in with a 38-second split. Our true freshmen, Mike and Alex, began their careers well and showed a lot of promise for us."

Team results were not recorded for the event.

The cross country teams continue action next Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Montana State Invitational in Bozeman, Mont.
