Cross Country Teams Begin Season At Wyoming Invitational

September 5, 1998

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming Cross Country teams began their 1998 season today by hosting Colorado State in the Wyoming Inviational, which was held at LaPrele Park. CSU defeated Wyoming in both the mens and womens races, by scores of 15-65, in the womens race, and 24-37 in the mens race. (*Note: Lowest score wins)

The womens race saw a rebuilding Cowgirl squad take on a strong CSU team that is picked to finish second in the WAC. CSU swept the first through tenth place finishes with Elizabeth Roodell winning the 2 1/4 mile race in a time of 13:10. Wyomings top finisher was junior Amy Hill, from Duluth, Minn., who finished the course in 14:12, good for 11th place. The second finisher for the Cowgirls was freshman Lisa Sims, from Laramie, who finished 13th with a time of 15:08. Fellow freshman Tara LaMay, of Urbandale, Iowa, finished 14th at 15:21. Roodell was followed closely the whole race by Jeanie Crist who finished second with a time of 13:14. CSUs Christy Virgin finished third at 13:32.

The mens race saw the Cowboys Joe Hall, a junior from Buffalo, Wyo., take the early lead and then stretch that lead into a :36 second victory over the rest of the field. Hall finished the four mile course in a time of 20:16. CSU grabbed places 2-3-4 to help secure the team victory, led by second place finisher Josh Lybarger who ran the race in 20:52. Wyomings next finisher was sophomore Greg Schabron, of Laramie, who finished fifth with a time of 21:14. Schabron was followed closely by UWs Andy Shellenbarger, a freshman from Ft. Collins, Colo., who posted a time of 21:15. UWs mens team was still feeling the effects of several summer injuries, including a knee injury to 1997 WAC Freshman of the Year Chris Lee who finished 12th.

Final team scores were decided by adding the places of the top five finishers for each school.

Wyomings teams will have a chance to face CSU again next weekend as they travel to Ft. Collins to compete in the Colorado State Invitational, on Saturday, September 12.

Post-race quotes from head coach Larry Judge: "Joe Hall put in the neccesary mileage this summer and was our number one runner in the mens race and that was a nice suprise for us. I was also real impressed with Greg Schabron. He was a redshirt in cross country and outdoor track last year and he also put in a good summer.

"I think the future is bright for our men. We had a freshman, Andy Shellenbarger, finish third, and he looked real strong, and our top two runners from last year (Chris Lee and Dave Roberts) are still a little dinged up with minor injuries. When we get those two into the race it makes our top five very strong and I think we have a very good shot at finishing in the top three in the WAC.

"The womens race was a good training situation for us and weve really tried to put in some good base-work with the women as were going through the rebuilding phase. We used it kind of as a glorified workout. Amy Hill ran a solid race for us and I was also impressed with our freshmen. Tara LaMay ran a solid race, and were still waiting to get Galena Ackerman eligible, who I think will be our number two runner.

"I think that in the conference our women will be solid and we are looking for an upper division finish in the WAC. CSU is picked number two in the WAC and they had some good numbers here, so this was a tough first race for the women."

Post-race quotes from mens race winner Joe Hall: "I thought the race went real well and it was a great day for it. There were lots of corners in the course but I was able to maneuver them and did all right.

"I worked real hard this summer coming off of a red-shirt year last season, and I put in the extra miles so I could be in good shape when I came in and it looks like that work paid off.

"I look to stay tough this year, and I look forward to the others coming off injuries and getting right up their with me. Hopefully I can help lead this team to a top three finish in the WAC."
