The University of Wyoming cross country teams made a strong showing in Lincoln, Neb., where they competed in the Woody Greeno Invitational. The Cowgirls finished third in the university division and fifth of 35 teams overall, while the Cowboys finished second in the university division and third overall.

Teams competing in the University Division were the University of Nebraska, South Dakota State University, Creighton University, University of Northern Colorado and Wyoming. A number of other schools competed in the college division and were scored separately.

"I was very pleased with our effort today," said Wyoming head cross country coach Randy Cole. "The conditions were hot and windy which made for a slow course, so the times were slower across the board."

For the women, freshman Emily Higgins made another strong showing with her fourth place time of 22:32. Gretchen Johnson (Fagley), who finished just begin Higgins in eighth place with a time of 23:10, improved from last year's finish of 20th. In her first Division I-A race, freshman Brenna Dooley came on strong for the Cowgirls with her 10th place time of 33:15. Finishing out the Cowgirl runners were senior Tanya Kienlen (25:05), who finished 60th and freshman Erin Heffron (26:16), who crossed the finish line in 112th place.

"I thought the women did a solid job starting out. They were able to maintain good position by the 3k mark," said Cole. "Emily got well and maintained her composure throughout the entire race and came away with a great finish."

On the Cowboys' side, senior Philemon Tanui also had another strong showing as he was able to finish in second place overall with a time of 25:28. Next in line for the Cowboys was senior Chris Schabron (27:13) in 28th, followed by Shadrack Too (27:22) in 32nd , Brett Schuler (27:39) in 42nd, Eric Love (28:39) in 90th and Dustin Gibson rounded out the men's squad with a time of 28:40, which was good enough for 92nd place.

"I thought that the guys really worked well together. We haven't opened up Mark Korir yet and Michael Huntington stayed home as well, and they're two main point getters for us," said Cole. "I'm just really pleased with the way the guys stepped up today and it's important to note that the times certainly don't reflect the effort".

Up next for the UW cross country teams will be the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder, Colo., on September 30.
