An injured and ill University ofWyoming cross country team competed at the Rocky Mountain Shootout inBoulder, Colo., Saturday, Sept. 30. Both the men's and women's teamsplaced second in the Division I results behind host school andnationally ranked Colorado.

Fourteen schools competed on the men's side, however the meet wasbroken into two groups, Division I schools (4 teams) and non-Division Ischools (10). On the women's side 12 teams competed, with only threebeing Division I schools.

Senior Greg Schabron was the top individual finisher for the Cowboys, placing eighth in Division I standings on the eight-kilometer coursewith a time of 26 minutes, 50 seconds. Schabron was followed by juniorChris Jons who ran one of his better races of the season with aninth-place finish (27:31). UW senior Joe Hall placed 11th (28:33)despite being stricken with the stomach flu. Cody Brown, who was justcoming off an illness, placed 15th (29:23).

"It was hard to put a team concept together from the point that some ofour people who had been doing the job for us this season were sick."said UW head cross country coach Jim Sanchez. "We don't have much depthand when you have two people sick it's hard to see a complete teamresult."

The Cowgirls were paced by sophomore Jennifer Vessa who ran the 5.7kilometer course with a time of 23:38, good enough for eight in theDivision I standings. Vessa was followed by teammates Stephanie Hanksin ninth (24:34), Leslie Jackson in tenth (24:40) and Leslie Jackson in11th (24:52).

"As with our prior meets this season, our progress isn't really beingseen in the overall team standings," Sanchez said. "However, little bylittle we are seeing improvements with our athletes as far as runningbetter and smarter races."

The Cowgirls left two of their top runners, Galena Ackerman and KristyMurff, at home to rest injuries.

"As a team I guess the plus from this meet was that some of the peoplewe haven't heard from or who haven't done much this season are startingto come around and compete well." Sanchez said.
