San Diego, Calif. (October 4, 2003)-- The University ofWyoming cross country teams competed at the Pre-MWCChampionship meet Saturday in San Diego, Calif. The Cowboyharriers captured second place with 49 points while theCowgirls placed third with 81 points.
The pre-MWC meet allows competitors to get used to thecourse which they will also run on Nov. 1, when San DiegoState hosts the MWC championship meet for the first time inthe conference's five-year history.
Leading the Cowboys was sophomore Brian Knight who beat allcompetitors in the 8-kilometer race with a time of 26:09.Knight's first place finish is the first of his Cowboycareer. Freshman Jason Sanders trailed Knight to finishninth with a time of 26:57. Sophomore Ragen Driver set apersonal best mark with an 11th place finish and a time of27:08. Other UW runners that helped lead the Pokes to theirbest finish of the season was senior Jason Delaney (13thplace, 27:14), junior Jeremy Thompson (16th place, 27:52)and sophomore Brian Harnish (17th place, 28:02).
Five Cowgirls finished in the top 20 in the women's6-kilometer race. Pacing the Cowgirls was junior Natalie Kean who finished 11th overall with a time of 23:22.Sophomore Tanice Barnett crossed the finish line in 23:33 tofinish 13th. Sophomore Emerald Reid, junior Ashley Pedersonand sophomore Christine Michel finished in 18th (24:03),19th (24:03) and 20th (24:05), respectively. Junior RachelStacy bettered her season best time in the 6k by ten secondswith her 24:18 performance which placed her 23rd. SophomoresKristen Brauneis and Elena Helmerick rounded out theCowgirls finishing 27th (24:59) and 34th (25:51).
Another group of Cowgirl runners competed at the RockyMountain Shootout in Boulder, Colo. on Saturday. Wyomingfinished third out of three teams in the Division Icategory. Freshman Lauren Tonoli finished 11th in the6-kilometer race with a time of 24:38 to pace the Cowgirlsquad. Other UW runners that competed was sophomore MaggieDiller (13th, 24:51), senior Jennifer Mansell (14th, 24:52),sophomore Shannon Obermire (17th, 25:35), junior JessicaJohnson (19th, 26:33) and sophomore Amber Barlow (20th,27:07).
The Cowboy and Cowgirl harriers will next compete at theDan Libera Memorial on Oct. 11 in Greeley, Colo.
