LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Auburn University Inivitational Saturday in Auburn, Ala. The Cowboys finished 11th out of 30 teams in the 8-kilometer event, while the Cowgirls placed 10th out of 30 teams in their 5-kilometer race.
The Cowgirls were paced by senior Stephanie Hanks who finished 36th with a time of 17:56. Hanks was followed by sophomore Ashley Mecham (46th 18:08), freshman Elena Helmerick (48th 18:16), sophomore Natalie Kean (79th 18:49), freshman Emerald Reid (110th 19:23), junior Cathy Cooper (117th 19:28), and freshman Christine Michel (136th 19:51). There were 235 competitors in the women's race.
Freshman Brian Knight led the Cowboys with a 27th place out of 253 runners with a time of 24:55. Following Knight were freshman Brian Harnish (66th 25:40), sophomore Arte Huhn (83rd 26:00), freshman Michael Huntington (131st 26:52), sophomore Jeremy Thompson (150th 27:21), and freshman Troy Hernandez (214th 29:24).
"Our one through four runners ran fairly well for both teams", said Wyoming head cross country coach Jim Sanchez. "We just needed our 5th runner to step up on both sides as well, that is what costed us a few places. We need to find our 5th runners before we head to the Mountain West Championships in two weeks. The good thing is I know we have the talent on our teams to step up and compete."
The Cowboys and Cowgirls take next weekend off as they get ready for the Mountain West Cross Country Championships on November 1, in Provo, Utah.
