2012 Schedule Announced For Wyoming Cross Country

June 5, 2012

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The 2012 schedule for the University of Wyoming cross country program was released Tuesday, and features four events in Wyoming and neighboring states.

Action begins Aug. 31 with the Wyoming Invitational, hosted by Jacoby Golf Course in Laramie. UW traditionally opens its season by hosting its home event every season. Two weeks later, the Cowboys and Cowgirls head to the Montana State Invitational in Bozeman, Mont., and then will run in the Rocky Mountain Shootout on Sept. 29 in Boulder, Colo.

UW then will run in the Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 13 in Louisville, Ky. The postseason begins with the Mountain West Championships on Oct. 26 in Las Vegas, followed by the NCAA Mountain Region Championships on Nov. 9 in Fort Collins, Colo. The NCAA National Championships take place on Nov. 19 in Louisville.

"It's always a stepping stone towards the championship races, with our conference and hopefully some national participation," Wyoming cross country coach Randy Cole said of the structure of the schedule. "That's why, like most college teams, we go every other week so we can race and then recover.

"The meets allow us to see some of our regional opponents that we don't get to see a lot. That September schedule is very regional-oriented. Also, you're going to have to race at altitude at (the NCAA Mountain Region meet), so to do that, you need to race at altitude at some point during the season.

"The schedule features plenty of competition, a chance to get some local, regional and national exposure, and goes toward building up for the championships."
