LARAMIE, Wyo. - Following fifth-place finishes at the 2011 Mountain West Cross Country Championships, the Cowboy and Cowgirl squads have been selected to place fifth in 2012 as revealed in the MW preseason poll Monday.

The Cowgirls were given 39 points in the coaches' poll as they placed ahead of Fresno State and UNLV (23 points apiece), Nevada (21) and San Diego State (10).

New Mexico received 63 points as the preseason favorite, followed by Boise State (54), Colorado State (48) and Air Force (43). The Lobos are also ranked No. 5 in the USTFCCCA preseason NCAA Mountain Region poll.

Sophomore Holly Page is expected to lead the Cowgirls as she earned MW Freshman of the Year honors last season and finished 20th at the MW Championship. Christine Nelson and Abi Bever are also among the returning leaders in 2012.

On the men's side, the Cowboys received nine points as they placed ahead of Fresno State (7) in the poll. The Lobos were picked to repeat as champions with 24 points, followed by Air Force (21), Boise State (17) and Colorado State (12).

The Cowboys will be led by junior Garrett Zans, who earned all-region honors last year with a 22nd-place finish at the Mountain Regional. He also achieved 31st place at the MW Championship and competed in four other events in which he finished among the team leaders.

The 2012 MW Cross Country Championships will be hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas on Oct. 26. The USTFCCCA national poll is scheduled for release Tuesday.
