COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Wyoming's Aaron Derner has been named the Mountain West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. The weekly accolade is the first of Derner's career.
A native of Waterford, Wis., Derner had a strong start to the 2014 season at last Saturday's Aggie Invite in Logan, Utah. The junior traversed the 4-mile course in 20:45 to place second overall in the 46-man field and cross the line as the first Cowboy. It was the first time since 2012 he had paced the Pokes and fourth overall. Derner also helped Wyoming win the team title at the event with 23 points, its third team victory over the past two seasons.
Wyoming is off until the Montana State Invite on Sept. 20 in Bozeman, Mont.
