Final 1998 Press Release

Looking Ahead: The Cowboy and Cowgirl cross country teams have completed their season. This past weekend the Cowboys competed in the Distric VII Championships in Provo, Utah. The women's team did not compete. For the Wyoming track and field program, the indoor season starts on December 12 with the Wyoming Earlybird in Laramie.

District VII Championships: The 1998 District VII Championships were held this past Saturday in Provo, Utah. The 10K course ran through East Bay Golf Course.

Chris Lee led the Pokes with a 21st-place finish. Lee ran the course in a time of 32:29. Joe Hall followed up Lee with a 41st-place finish. Hall, a junior from Buffalo, Wyo., finished with a time of 33:03. Lee and Hall were followed by David Roberts (52nd, 33:32), Andy Shellenbarger (53rd, 33:33), Chris Jons (90th, 35:21), and Nathan McLeland (95th, 35:38).

Wyoming finished with 243 team points, good for 10th-place. The team champion was Colorado, who had 34 team points. Colorado was followed by Northern Arizona, Weber State, Brigham Young and Idaho State.

The individual champion was Adam Goucher of Colorado. Goucher ran the course in a time of 30:43.

On the women's side, Brigham Young was the team champion. Maggie Chan of BYU was the individual champion. Chan ran the 5K course in a time of 17:33, 17 seconds ahead of anyone else.

WAC Championships Results: The University of Wyoming men's cross country team finished third at the WAC Championships. The Cowboys finished with 109 team points, trailing only Brigham Young and Air Force. The leading runner for the Pokes was Joe Hall, who finished sixth overall in the race with a time of 25:01. Hall was followed by Chris Lee, who wound up ninth with a time of 25:20. David Roberts finished 18th (25:42), Andy Shellenbarger was 37th (26:28), Greg Schabron was 39th (26:31), and Nathan McLeland was 47th (26:46). On the women's side the Cowgirls finished 14th with 354 team points. The Wyoming squad was led by Tara LaMay, who finished with a time of 19:49, good for 63rd-place. LaMay was followed by Galena Ackerman (19:51, 68th), Christy Burgess (19:52, 69th), Amy Hill (20:08, 75th), Melissa Greer (20:18, 79th), and Lisa Sims (20:43, 95th).

WAC Honors: Brigham Young University captured both the men's and women's team championships. The Cougar men won with 77 team points and the women won after totaling only 22 team points. After the WAC Championships the conference honored its freshmen, athlete, and coaches of the year. On the women's side, Gladys Keitany of TCU was named Freshman of the Year, Maggie Chan of BYU was named Athlete of the Year, and the Coach of the Year was Patrick Shane of BYU. For the men, Epharain Mokgukhu of BYU was named Freshman of the Year, Jeff Simonich of Utah was named Athlete of the Year, and Utah's Mike Jones was named Coach of the Year.

Signees: Wyoming will welcome 30 newcomers to the squad. Ten of the newcomers are from the state of Wyoming and 20 were signed to athletic scholarship. "I feel that this is the finest recruiting class that I have ever been associated with," said Judge. "This is without a doubt one of the top five recruiting classes in the nation."

WAC Coaches Poll Results: The Univeristy of Wyoming women's cross country team was picked to finish fifth in the 16-team WAC by the conference's coaches. The Cowgirls finished with 144 points in the poll. The Cowboy cross country team was picked sixth on the 13-team men's side. The Cowboys finished with 81 points. Brigham Young was favored to repeat as WAC Champion on both the men's and women's side.
