Sept. 23, 2010
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
It's been nine years since eight University of Wyoming student-athletes died in a traffic collision, but that doesn't mean they've been forgotten.
It was Sept. 16, 2001, when tragedy struck the UW cross country team. An early morning crash claimed the lives of Justin M. Lambert-Belanger, Cody B. Brown, Kyle N. Johnson, Joshua D. Jones, Morgan J. McLeland, Kevin L. Salverson, Nicholas J. Schabron and Shane E. Shatto.
The memory of those runners will be honored Saturday in the "Always A Cowboy 8K Run/5K Walk," an annual event in Laramie, Wyo. The race will be staged at Undine Park, and runners and walkers of all abilities are encouraged to participate. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the University of Wyoming cross country teams.
"It's very good to keep the memory of the boys killed in the accident and good awareness of safe driving habits," Wyoming head coach Randy Cole said. "It's in memory of the boys but it's a good celebration of the sport. Those are several things to keep in mind when you look at it that way."
The Wyoming cross country teams will run in the event as part of their weekly workout, but awards will go to first- and second-place winners in each age category, as well as the top two overall men and women. There also will be prizes for the top two walkers, along with raffle prizes.
Pre-registration will be available until Thursday and is $20. After that deadline, registration will cost $25. Registration and checks can be sent or hand-delivered to Gem City Bone and Joint Physical Therapy at 1909 Vista Dr., Laramie, WY 82070.
Race-day registration begins at 7 a.m., and racing will begin at 8:30 a.m.
Participants can pick up race packets on the day of race at Undine Park.
