LARAMIE, Wyo. - As part of the Excellence at 7220 program, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee's (SAAC) hosted the 2nd Annual Undie Run. The Undie Run held on Sunday afternoon, September 27, 2015 in the Indoor Practice Facility was successful.
The run was, for the most part, a clothing donation drive. Students came dressed from head to toe in clothing they intended to donate to the clothing drive. As the student-athlete came to each obstacle in the obstacle course they would choose which clothing article (beanie, mittens, sweatshirt, etc.) they wanted to donate along the course. Student-athletes brought at least three articles of clothing each in which they planned to donate.
This year's event had 51 student-athletes in attendance, and the various articles of clothing collected more than 300 items. Thanks to the participation of the student athletes, the event helped tally over 100 community service hours for the Cowgirls/Cowboys in their academic year competition against other institutions in the Mountain West Conference. Last year the Cowgirls/Cowboys finished third in the competition, earning more than 4,000 hours of community service.
"It was so much fun to get all sports together and compete! It's also an awesome cause and great chance to donate clothes that you don't want anymore. I totally recommend getting involved with these events!" said Bridget Shanahan, a senior on the UW Volleyball team and SAAC's media relation's officer.
SAAC hosted the Undie Run in the same location as last year, which moved location from outdoors to the Indoor Practice Facility (IPD), due to inclement weather. It turned out that the student-athletes enjoyed the indoor site so much, they decided to host it indoors again this year. "Since it rained last year we had to move into the IPF and created an obstacle course instead. But in all honestly, I think we had even more fun that way and doing it again this year was a blast," said Shanahan.
The SAAC Executive Board members plan to continue this event for years to come, and hope to only grow the number of donations and participation so that they can help those who are less fortunate in the community.
SAAC's annual Gatorade Pong Tournament will be the next event set to be held on Sunday, October 25th. The event is a canned food drive, and is also costume contest!
