Cowboy Basketball Holds First Scrimmage

October 24, 1998

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

New Wyoming head coach Steve McClain and his Cowboy Basketball squad gave fans a taste of their up-tempo game on Saturday in a 24-minute scrimmage. The Gold team won the scrimmage 57-42. LeDarion Jones led the Gold squad with 20 points. Brett McFall was the leading scorer for the White squad with 12.

"I thought the kids did a good job today of playing unselfishly and pushing the ball up the court," said McClain. "You dont put a system like ours in place overnight, but the guys seem to be enjoying this style of play. We have an unselfish group of players, which just makes our style of play better. Having practiced for only a week, I feel like weve made a lot of progress.

"I was really pleased with the number of fans who came out to watch us today. The fans really bought into last years team, and we want them to buy into this years. The way we play the game is great for fans. Its an exciting style, made for fans. We want people to come out and have a good time when they watch us."

Two Cowboys were held out of the scrimmage. Junior guard Andy Young suffered a slight groin muscle pull earlier this week in practice and didnt play. Freshman guard Pasha Bains also didnt play. Bains had surgery earlier this month to repair a broken bone in his left (non-shooting) elbow, and will likely be out until mid to late November.

McClain also said he was by the number of players who contributed in the scrimmage, which was comprised of two 12-minute halves.

"If we want to be able to play pressure defense and push the ball on offense, we need nine to 10 guys to be able to come in and give us quality minutes," said McClain. "Ive told my team that right now I dont see much difference between our top 10 players -- thats good for our system. If we can develop that kind of depth, we can keep fresh people on the court, and we can keep the pressure on our opponents."

The Cowboys begin the 1998-99 season with an exhibition game against the California All-Stars on Monday, Nov. 2, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Arena-Auditiorium. That game will be preceded by the Wyoming Cowgirls versus the Swedish All-Stars at 5:15 p.m.
