The University of Wyoming Cowboy basketball team opened up its1999-2000 season Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Arena-Auditorium with a 92-54 victory over Northwestern State (LA).
Wyoming (1-0) jumped out to a 48-25 lead at the half after hittingeight three-point attempts and shooting 60.7 percent from the field.The Pokes shot 53.5 percent from the field for the game, 50 percent frombehind the three-point line.
" I thought our kids played within our system," said head coachSteve McClain. "I was also very pleased with the fact that everyoneplayed hard to the end. We continued to guard and apply pressure evenwhen we had the big lead."
Senior guard Anthony Blakes led all Poke scorers with 14 points.Junior Ugo Udezue pitched in 13 points and nine rebounds. SophomoreChris McMillian was the other Cowboy starter in double figures with tenpoints. Freshman Aaron Abrams came off the bench in his first evercollege game in the brown and yellow to score 12 points. Senior BrettMcFall also sparked UW off the bench with 11 points, after goingthree-for-four from behind the three-point arc.
"We had good balance with five guys in double figures, and if you'relooking to play us it's pretty hard to decide who you're going to focuson stopping." McClain said.
Wyoming returns to the A-A floor Tuesday night when the play host toAkron. The Zips are coming off a 105-45 victory over Slippery Rock.
