LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowboy basketball team will be back home this Tuesday night and will host the UNLV Runnin' Rebels, who are receiving votes in both top-25 polls, in the Arena-Auditorium beginning at 8 p.m. The game will be televised by The Mtn.
A Look at the Matchup with UNLV:
The Cowboys (8-11 overall and 1-4 in the Mountain West Conference) are looking to break a three-game losing streak and have a good place to do it, the Arena-Auditorium. The Pokes have posted an 8-3 record at home this season and have outscored their opponents by an average of 12.5 points a game.
UNLV is currently 15-5 overall and 3-3 in the MWC. They began this season 9-0, en route to a 12-2 non-conference record. That 9-0 start was the best by a UNLV team since the 1990-91 season. In league play they have posted wins over TCU, at Air Force and New Mexico. Their three losses came to BYU, at San Diego State and Colorado State. Each Team's Leaders:
Three Cowboys are averaging double figures in scoring, led by sophomore Desmar Jackson. Jackson is the seventh-best scorer in the MWC with a 15.1 points per game average. He is followed by senior Djibril Thiam (10.8 ppg) and sophomore Amath M'Baye (10.4 ppg). M'Baye has scored in double figures in three straight games.
Both Thiam and Luster also rank among the MWC's top rebounders and shot blockers. Thiam ranks as the league's 12th best rebounder (5.1 rpg) and is No. 5 in blocks (1.39 bpg). M'Baye ranks 10th in rebounding (5.3 rpg) and is tied for ninth in blocks (0.79 bpg).
Four different Runnin' Rebels are averaging double figures in scoring--junior forward Chace Stanback (13.0 ppg), senior guard Tre'Von Willis (11.8 ppg), junior guard Oscar Bellfield (10.8 ppg) and sophomore guard Anthony Marshall (10.6 ppg).
Stanback and senior guard Derrick Jasper lead the Rebels in rebounding with 5.5 per game.
Thiam Needs Just Four More Blocks to Join UW's All-Time Top-10 Shot Blockers:
Senior Djibril Thiam is close to entering his name among the top-10 shot blockers in Wyoming history. During his two and a half-year career, he has blocked 76 shots. He enters Tuesday's game needing just four more blocks to reach UW's all-time top 10.
Cowboys and Rebels Will Meet for the 41st Time:
This Tuesday's meeting will be the 41st between Wyoming and UNLV. UNLV leads the series 26-14. In games played in Laramie, the Cowboys have posted a record of 11-7.
Cowboys and the Injury Bug:
There is no doubt that the injury bug has hit the Wyoming Cowboys this season. Of the 12 players who are eligible to play (Rob Watsabaugh and Leonard Washington are redshirting), a total of six have missed at least one game this season. The Cowboys have had players miss a total of 39 games this season. Two players are out for the season in juniors Luke Martinez and Afam Muojeke. In addition, only two Cowboys have played in all 19 games, Francisco Cruz and Amath M'Baye.
