LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowboys and Utah Utes will meet for the 157th time this Wednesday, Feb. 1 in Wyoming's Arena-Auditorium. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., Mountain Time. Wyoming enters Wednesday's game with an 11-9 overall record, 4-3 in the Mountain West Conference. Utah is 9-9 overall, 2-5 in the MWC.
Wyoming has won eight of the last 10 meetings played in Laramie versus the Utah Utes.
Included in those eight wins were home victories over three Utah teams that were ranked nationally.
In 1996, Wyoming defeated the then No. 7 ranked Utes, 80-76. The 1998 season saw the Pokes defeat then No. 5 ranked Utah, 62-56, and in 2000 Wyoming beat a No. 24 ranked Utah squad, 88-61. The 1998 Utah team that was defeated by the Cowboys went on to finish as the National Runnerup for the NCAA title, losing to Kentucky, 69-78, in the NCAA Championship game.
Another big win in those last eight home victories for UW was a 57-56 Cowboy victory in 2002, in a game that saw the Cowboys capture the 2002 Mountain West Conference Championship outright over the Utes.
Wednesday's game will mark the halfway point of the 2006 conference race. The Cowboys enter the game tied for fourth with BYU. Utah is in seventh place in the nine-team league.
The only television coverage of Wednesday's game will be a telecast by KJZZ-TV of Salt Lake City, Utah, back to the state of Utah.
The Cowboy Sports Network will begin its radio coverage of this week's game at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show.
Wyoming will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., for a game on Saturday, Feb. 4 to begin the second half of conference play.
