Cowboys Off to Best Start Since NCAA Championship Season

Feb. 3, 2003

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

With its 16-3 start this season, the Wyoming Cowboys are off to their best start since the 1942-43 season when the University of Wyoming captured the NCAA Championship under Basketball Hall of Fame coach Everett Shelton.

The 1942-43 NCAA Championship team of Wyoming posted an 18-1 start through 19 games and went on to post a 26-1 start on way to a 31-2 record. Wyoming defeated Georgetown, 46-34, on March 30, 1943, to capture the 1943 NCAA Championship in New York City. The Pokes then defeated St. John's, the 1943 National Invitation Tournament Champion, in a Red Cross Benefit game on April 1 in New York City to establish itself as the top team in college basketball for the 1942-43 season. Wyoming defeated St. John's 52-47 in overtime in the game that benefitted the Red Cross during World War II.

Prior to last Saturday's win at UNLV, 90-80, in Las Vegas, the Cowboys were tied with the 1990-91 and 1950-51 Cowboy teams that began the season 15-3. But both the '90-'91 and '50-'51 UW squads lost their 19th games to go 15-4.
