LeDarion Jones, a senior on theUniversity of Wyoming men's basketball team, was selected on Thursday as aFirst Team GTE Academic All-District VII honoree. Jones, who has earned a3.50 cumulative grade-point average in industrial technology education, wasone of only five individuals to earn the honor. By being named First TeamAcademic All-District, he now will be eligible for the national ballot. TheAcademic All-America team will be announced later this spring.
The GTE Academic All-District and Academic All-America Teams aresponsored by GTE Corporation. Student-athletes are selected in voting bythe College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA). CoSIDADistrict VII is made up of the states of Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas,Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota and the Canadianprovinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
To qualify, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum 3.20cumulative grade-point average, must be at least a sophomore and must haveparticipated in at least 50 percent of his team's games.
Jones is a two-time Academic All-Conference and AcademicScholar-Athlete selection. A year ago, Jones was one of only 37 men'sbasketball players from across the nation to be selected as an Arthur AsheJr. Sports Scholar. He is a leading candidate for that honor again thisyear.
In this, his senior season, Jones has helped lead the Cowboys to a16-10 record, 6-5 in the Mountain West Conference. He is averaging 13.4points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game in 28.5 minutes per game. Heis shooting 45.4 percent from the field and 73.8 percent from the free throwline. He has also made 12 of 28 3-point attempts, 42.9 percent.
Jones currently ranks 13th in the MWC in scoring (13.4 ppg) andrebounding (5.2 rpg). He scored a career-high 30 points against Air Forceon Feb. 5. He also scored 26 points twice this season at Oregon State onDec. 20 and at Brigham Young on Jan. 20.
During his two-year career at Wyoming, Jones has started 48 of 50career games and has averaged 12.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game over hiscareer. He has scored in double figures in 32 of 50 career games.
