LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowboy basketball team will be looking to duplicate one of their best games of the season this Saturday as they take on the Utah Runnin' Utes for the second time. This time the game will take place on the road in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Cowboys beat Utah earlier this season in Laramie by a final score of 75-69. Sophomore Adam Waddell led the Pokes that night by matching the Mountain West Conference's single-game rebounding record with 22. He added 13 points to record his first career double-double. Freshman Desmar Jackson led the Pokes in scoring with 21 points.
Saturday's game at Utah will be televised live by the Mtn. and will begin at 4 p.m. from Utah's Huntsman Center.
The Cowboys enter Saturday with an overall record of 9-18 and an MWC mark of 2-11. Since that win over Utah, UW has dropped seven straight games.
Utah is currently 13-14 overall and 6-7 in the MWC. Since that game in Laramie back on Jan. 27, the Runnin' Utes have posted a record of 3-4. They are currently tied for fifth place in the MWC standings.
Wyoming's Leaders: True freshman Desmar Jackson continues to be the Cowboys' go-to guy. Over UW's last eight games, he has averaged 17.5 points a game. He is currently the fifth best scoring freshman in the MWC with 10.5 points per game. With 274 points thus far this season, he has put together the 14th best scoring season by a freshman in MWC history.
Junior Djibril Thiam has scored in double figures in four straight games. On the year, he is averaging 9.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 0.9 blocks per game. He ranks 12th in the MWC in rebounding and sixth in blocks.
Despite struggling with a sore right knee and left ankle, sophomore Adam Waddell continues to contribute a great deal to the Cowboy lineup. Waddell is currently averaging 10.0 points and 5.8 rebounds a game. He ranks No. 7 in the MWC in rebounding.
Utah's Leaders: Utah is led by three players who are averaging double figures in scoring--junior guard Carlon Brown (13.2 ppg), freshman guard Marshall Henderson (12.5 ppg) and senior guard Luka Drca (10.0 ppg). Henderson is the leading freshman scorer in the MWC.
Senior forward Kim Tillie is Utah's leading rebounder with 5.4 per game and sophomore center David Foster is averaging 4.2 blocks per game and ranks fourth in the nation.
Series Notes: The Wyoming-Utah series dates back to Jan. 23, 1925, when Wyoming defeated Utah 31-29 in Salt Lake City. This week's meeting will be the 168th meeting, with Wyoming trailing 75-92. In games played in Salt Lake City, the Pokes have posted a record of 23-37.
The recent series has been dominated by the home team. Wyoming has won 11 of the last 15 meetings in Laramie and Utah has won 12 of the last 14 games in Salt Lake City.
Up Next: Wyoming will have a quick turnaround after returning from Salt Lake. They will host Air Force on Tuesday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. That game will be simulcast by both the Mtn. and CBS College Sports. It will mark the final home game of the 2009-10 season for the Cowboys.
