LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Riding high on a three-game Mountain West Conference winning streak, the Wyoming Cowboy basketball team will play its final road game of the 2008-09 season on Saturday as they travel to Air Force. The Cowboys and Falcons will tip-off at 4 p.m. from Clune Arena. The game will be televised by The Mtn.
With an 82-79 road win over Colorado State on Wednesday night, the Cowboys picked up their first conference road win of the season and extended their current MWC winning streak to three games. The Pokes are now 17-10 overall and 6-7 in the MWC.
Air Force is looking for their first conference win of the season this Saturday, as they are currently 0-13 in league play and 9-17 overall.
Earlier this season, the Cowboys came away with a 72-59 home win over Air Force on Jan. 27. Tyson Johnson led the Cowboys in scoring with 18 points. However, Afam Muojeke stole the show by recording his first career double-double. Muojeke finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Air Force was led by Andrew Henke, who scored 18 points.
The Cowboys lead the all-time series with Air Force 69-27. In games played in Colorado Springs, the Pokes are 29-16. Since the formation of the MWC, the series has featured a number of close games. In fact, 14 of the 22 MWC meetings have been decided by six points or less.
The Cowboys are led by the MWC's scoring and assist leader, Brandon Ewing. Ewing had an historic night in Wyoming's win over Colorado State, as he became the second leading scorer in Wyoming basketball history. Ewing, who has now scored 2,058 career points, moved ahead of former Cowboy Flynn Robinson. Robinson scored 2,049 career points between 1963-65.
The Cowboy roster also features the MWC's top freshman, in terms of both scoring and rebounding. Muojeke is currently tops among all MWC freshmen with 14.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Those averages are the seventh and 12th best respective averages in all of the MWC.
By scoring 19 points in UW's win over Colorado State, Muojeke has now scored the fifth most points by a freshman in MWC history, 391. He is only 32 points away from matching Ewing for the most points scored by a freshman in league history.
This season, Air Force has been led in scoring by a trio of seniors including Henke, Anwar Johnson and Matt Holland. Henke is averaging 12.1 points per game, while Johnson is averaging 12.0 and Holland is averaging 11.1.
After taking on Air Force, the Cowboys will return to Laramie for their final two games of the 2008-09 regular season. The Pokes will host BYU on Wed., March 4 and New Mexico on Sat., March 7. Both games can be seen on The Mtn.
