LARAMIE, Wyo. -
March, the most exciting month in college basketball, has arrived and the Wyoming Cowboys are playing their best basketball of the season. The Cowboys will be looking to add to their current four-game Mountain West Conference winning streak when they host the BYU Cougars this Wednesday. The game will begin at 6 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium and will be televised by The Mtn.
The Cowboys current four-game MWC winning streak matches the program's longest since winning four consecutive games during the 2004-05 season. They have not won five consecutive conference games since the 2001-02 season, when they won the MWC regular-season title outright.
With those four straight wins, the Cowboys are now 18-10 overall and 7-7 in the MWC. Those 18 wins guarantee the best season by a Wyoming team since the 2002-03 season. BYU, who is currently tied for second place in the MWC, is currently 22-6 overall and 10-4 in league play.
Earlier this season, the Cowboys fell on the road to BYU by a score of 84-60. Redshirt freshman Afam Muojeke led the Pokes with 17 points. Jimmer Fredette led BYU with 28 points.
Senior Brandon Ewing, who will be playing his final two career home games this week, continues to lead the Cowboys. He is the MWC's leader in both scoring and assists, averaging 18.8 points and 5.18 assists per game. Those averages are the 44th best in the nation in scoring and the 33rd best in assists. He is one of only five players to rank in the top-50 of the nation in both categories.
Redshirt senior Sean Ogirri has been one of the top three-point shooters in the nation this season. By averaging 3.29 threes a game and shooting 42.2 percent from the three-point line, he ranks 12th and 23rd in the nation in those respective categories.
Ogirri had an especially great day in UW's road win over Air Force last Saturday. He made seven three-pointers in a single-game for the fourth time this season. In addition to scoring 23 points, he matched the second best three-point shooting game in Wyoming history.
The Cowboy attack also features the MWC's top freshman, in terms of both scoring and rebounding. Muojeke is currently tops among all MWC freshmen with 14.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. With 400 points this season, Muojeke is currently ranked fourth on the MWC's all-time freshman scoring list. He needs only 24 points to take the record away from his teammate, Ewing.
This season, BYU has been led by Lee Cummard, Jonathan Tavernari and Jimmer Fredette. Cummard is scoring 16.8 points a game, while Tavernari is adding 16.4 and Fredette is chipping in 16.1.
After BYU, the Cowboys will play their final game of the regular season on Saturday, March 7. The Cowboys will host New Mexico at 1:30 p.m. and the game will be televised by The Mtn.
