A Pair of Cowboy basketball sophomores were honored on Monday by the Mountain West Conference's media and head coaches, as they were named Honorable Mention All-MWC. Desmar Jackson and Amath M'Baye were each honored as two of the top players in the league.
For Jackson, a native of Warren, Ohio, this marks the second consecutive year he has been honored following the season. Last year he was named to the MWC's Third Team. He was also selected as a CollegeInsider.com Freshman All-American a year ago.
This season, Jackson is averaging 14.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.10 steals a game. He is ranked fifth in the MWC in scoring, is 12th in rebounding and is second in steals. He has scored in double figures in 24 games this season and has scored 20 or more points six times. In league play, he reached double figures 12 times and averaged 14.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals a game.
M'Baye, who hails from Bordeaux, France, is averaging 12.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 0.9 blocks a game this season. He is ranked 14th in the MWC in scoring, is ninth in rebounding and is seventh in blocks. He is the only Cowboy to start all 30 games this season, and has scored in double figures in 20 of those games.
Over the past seven games, M'Baye has averaged 16.7 points a and has scored over 20 points three times. In league play, he is averaging 13.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks a game.
Jackson and M'Baye form the best duo of sophomores in the MWC. Among all underclassmen in the league, Jackson is the second best scorer and the fifth best rebounder, while M'Baye is the fourth best scorer and the third best rebounder. Wyoming is the only school with two underclassmen ranked among the league's best in both categories.
The Cowboys will open play in the 2011 Conoco MWC Championships on Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nev. The Pokes will play TCU in the opening round of the tournament.
