COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Wyoming's Larry Nance Jr. and Josh Adams have earned all-conference honors the Mountain West announced Tuesday. Nance was named to the All-MW First Team and All-Defensive Team, while sharing MW Defensive Player of the Year with San Diego State's Skylar Spencer. Adams claimed All-MW Third Team. The awards were voted on by the league's head coaches.
Nance, a senior forward, is the Cowboys' first defensive player of the year since JayDee Luster in 2011-12 and Wyoming's second in head coach Larry Shyatt's four seasons back in Laramie. Nance was also All-MW First Team and All-Defensive Team last season, becoming the first Poke to earn two first-team accolades since Marcus Bailey in 2000-01 and 2001-02. A Cowboy has been on the MW's All-Defensive Team each of the past four seasons. Nance has paced the Pokes at 16.1 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game this season, while shooting 53 percent from the field. He is in the MW's top 10 in seven different statistical categories, while ranking 54th in the nation in field-goal percentage and 44th in defensive rebounds per game.
Adams, a junior guard, got the All-MW nod for the first time in his career. He averages 12.5 points per game for 11th in the conference, while his team-high 3.6 assists per game are sixth in the league. His 1.4 assist-to-turnover ratio is also sixth in the MW and his 1.4 steals are eighth. He is one of three Cowboys in the conference's top 10 in free throw percentage at 75 percent for ninth. He has three 20-point efforts in Wyoming's last six games and has scored in double figures in a team-high 23 contests this season.
Nance is complemented by Wyoming women's junior guard Jordan Kelley, who was named the MW's Newcomer of the Year on Monday. The duo represents the first Cowboy and Cowgirl to earn "Of the Year" awards in the same season since Megan McGuffey's Newcomer and Justin Williams' Defensive Player in 2005-06.
Wyoming opens play in the 2015 MW Championships in Las Vegas against Utah State on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. MT in the Thomas & Mack Center.
