Cowboys and Utes to Square Off in MWC Semifinal

The Wyoming Cowboys have advanced to the semifinal round of the 2009 Conoco Mountain West Conference Championships and will face the Utah Utes on Friday night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

Tip-off is set for 9:30 p.m. (MT)/8:30 p.m. (PT) and the game will be televised live by The Mtn. HD and CBS College Sports HD.

The Cowboys (19-12) beat the New Mexico Lobos, 75-67 in their quarterfinal game on Thursday night. The Utes (22-9) advanced by beating the TCU Horned Frogs, 61-58.

Tonight's game between Utah and Wyoming will mark the secondtime these two teams have met in the semifinals of the Mountain West ConferenceTournament. In 2006, the Cowboys beat the Utes 60-47 to advance to the MWCChampionship game.

The Cowboys and Utes have played four times in conference tournament play, witheach team winning two of those meetings.

Following are the four conference tournament games the two teams have played:

  • 2006 in Denver, Colo. (MWC Semifinals)- Wyoming won 60-47
  • 1991 in Laramie, Wyo. (WAC Semifinals)- Utah won 69-63
  • 1987 in Albuquerque, N.M. (WAC Quarterfinals)- Wyoming won 56-54
  • 1985 in El Paso, Texas (WAC First Round)- Utah won 61-60

    Wyoming has now posted a 7-9 record in the 10 MWC Tournaments. The Pokes' overallrecord in conference tournaments is 17-22. The Cowboys have now advanced to the MWC Semifinals in six of the first 10 MWC Tournaments. In addition to this year, Wyoming advanced to the Semifinals in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2006 and 2007.

  • Wyoming has played in the semifinals in three of the last four MWC Tournaments.
  • Wyoming has reached the Championship Game once -- in 2006. UW lost to San Diego State, 64-69 in one overtime.
  • Wyoming is 1-4 in the MWC Semifinals and was 3-2 in the WAC Semifinals, which adds up to a 4-6 combined record.
  • In his career, Brandon Ewing is averaging 20.3 points a game in MWC Tournament play. He has scored in double-figures in all seven MWC Tournament games of his career and has reached the 20-point plateau four times.
