Nathan Sobey Signs with Cowboy Basketball

April 11, 2012

Laramie, Wyo. - University of Wyoming coach Larry Shyatt announced on Wednesday, April 11, that Nathan Sobey has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Cowboy men's basketball team. A native of Warrnambool, Australia, Sobey will begin his UW career during the 2012-13 academic year.

"Nathan gives us everything we were looking for in one of our open perimeter positions, so we're really excited to have him join the Cowboy basketball family," Shyatt said. "With the losses of JayDee Luster and Francisco Cruz, this position was our most imperative to fill. We couldn't be happier with the young man who we spent the most time with in the country."

Wyoming has two scholarships left for the 2012-13 season. Below is Sobey's biography.

Nathan Sobey - Guard - Warrnambool, Australia
An athlete capable of playing all three guard positions, Nathan Sobey has been a standout at Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz., the past two seasons. The 6-3, 190-pound guard helped head coach Jerry Carrillo and the Apaches continue a history of success that includes 16-straight appearances in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Region I playoffs and seven appearances in the title game in the last 11 years.

As a sophomore in 2011-12, Sobey averaged 16.5 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game to help Cochise go 25-6 overall and earn its sixth Arizona Community College Athletic Conference title. The Apaches were ranked 16th in the NJCAA Division I national poll before falling in the semifinals of the Region I tournament. Sobey earned First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Region honors while shooting 48 percent (181-of-380) from the field and 32 percent (37-of-117) beyond the arc during the season.

During his freshman campaign, Sobey averaged 7.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists off the bench. Cochise went 22-11 that season and won the NJCAA Region I championship.

Sobey played his prep basketball at St. Patrick's High School in Warrnambool, Australia, and becomes the second native Australian to play for the Cowboys. Steve Leven from Airds, Australia, lettered for Wyoming in 2005-06.

Sobey was also recruited by Weber State, Fresno State, Saint Mary's and San Diego.

Shyatt on Sobey: "Nathan is a mature and competitive perimeter player with a workman's mentality as he approaches the game of basketball. What was most impressive about Nathan's recruitment was the fact our entire staff was able to develop a terrific relationship with him and we were all impressed with his abilities on and off the court."
