LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Six teams who competed in thepostseason a year ago, two Southeast Conference schools and one from thePAC-10 highlight Wyoming's 2000-2001 basketball schedule, announced Tuesdayby UW Athletics Director Lee Moon.
Louisiana State, Creighton, UNLV and Utah competed in the NCAATournament a year ago while Brigham Young and New Mexico played in the NIT.The Cowboys have a road date with LSU, a home-and-away series with Creightonand the regular home-and-away slate with Utah, BYU, UNLV and New Mexico.
Wyoming opens the season with four home games in November, beginningwith a foreign exhibition team on Nov. 9 and ending with the University ofDenver on Nov. 27. The Cowboys turn right around and play Creighton onDec. 1. The Cowboys will play Creighton, an entrant in last year's NCAATournament, in a rare doubleheader. In addition to the Laramie game, onDec. 1, the Cowboys will play at Omaha on Feb. 17.
The schedule features a pair of SEC schools on the road, SouthCarolina on Dec. 21, and LSU on Jan. 3. PAC-10 member Oregon State will beWyoming's opponent this season at Casper on Dec. 16. The Cowboys will openMountain West Conference play on Jan. 8, at Utah. They open the homeconference schedule, hosting Utah, Jan. 20.
"The early portion of the schedule is very challenging for us," HeadCoach Steve McClain said. " We are going to have to be very competitive athome. "But we wanted to play some very good programs early in the year sothat our new players can get an idea of what competition on this level isall about. The road schedule will be very difficult."
McClain enters his third season at Wyoming with a sensational 24-3(.889) record in the Arena-Auditorium. He is 12-2 (.857) in conferenceplay at Laramie The Cowboys have especially done well against Top 25 teamsin Laramie. They have now beaten nationally-ranked teams six consecutivetimes at home. The last time they lost to a Top 25 team came in December of1994.
"Everyone knows that the Cowboys could be a good basketball teamthis season," Moon said. "Considering the circumstances of how difficultscheduling can be, especially here, I think it is a good schedule. As ourprogram gets stronger, it becomes increasingly more difficult to schedule, especially at home. But I think we have a competitive schedule and onethat should be fun for our fans and challenging for our team. I'm alsovery pleased that 13 regular season games will be televised. I believe thatsays a great deal for the respect our program is gaining nationally."
The Cowboys will appear on three ESPN Big Monday games this season, twice in Laramie and once on the road. The conference opener on Jan. 8, atSalt Lake City will be the Cowboys' first Big Monday game. The Big Mondaygames at the Arena-Auditorium are set for Feb. 5, with UNLV, and on Feb. 26,with New Mexico.
