Wyoming Cowboy and Cowgirl Basketball Teams Begin Practice This Weekend

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming men's basketball team will begin practice for the 2005-06 basketball season on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:00 p.m. That practice is free and open to the public. On Saturday morning, Oct. 15 prior to the Wyoming-New Mexico football game the Cowboys will also hold a free open practice for fans beginning at 11:00 a.m. Both practices will be held in the Arena-Auditorium on the UW campus.

The Cowgirl Basketball team will also hold an open practice in the Arena-Auditorium on Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.

Steve McClain is beginning his eighth season as head coach of the Cowboys. The Cowboys have six lettermen returning for the 2005-06 season, led by senior Justin Williams, who was the Defensive Player of the Year in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. Seven newcomers and two other squadmen will join the six letterwinners on the 15-man Wyoming roster.

Wyoming will open the 2005-06 season on Wednesday, Nov. 2 with an exhibition game against Colorado State-Pueblo at 7:00 p.m.. The Pokes will play a second exhibition game on Tuesday, Nov. 8 against Chadron State before beginning the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 13. UW will host the Black Coaches Association (BCA) Invitational on Sunday, Nov. 13 through Tuesday, Nov. 15. Eight of the nation's top teams will travel to Laramie for the three-day tournament. Among those eight teams are: Charlotte, which earned a berth to last year's NCAA Tournament; perennial NCAA Tournament participant Butler; and Big Ten member Northwestern. The three-day event will include four games per day at noon, 2:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. each day. Wyoming's first game in the BCA Invitational will be Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2:00 p.m. against Alabama State.

11:00 am - 1:00 pm: Coach Steve McClain will be putting his Cowboy Basketball squad through a practice session. Come preview this year's outstanding recruiting class, as well as MWC Defensive Player of the Year Justin Williams.

1:00 pm: Coach Joe Glenn and the Wyoming Cowboys take on the New Mexico Lobos at Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium - Homecoming.
