LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming head basketball coach Heath Schroyer announced Wednesday that entering this coming Saturday's regular-season opener versus the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs that three Cowboys will be unavailable to play.
Freshmen European players Marios Matalon and Mikhail Linskens must sit out some games to satisfy NCAA rules regarding international players, and fellow freshman Afam Muojeke will redshirt the 2007-08 season. Matalon must sit out the first three regular-season contests, while Linskens must sit out the first five games of the season.
"We were aware when we recruited Marios (Matalon) and Mikhail (Linskens) that they may have to sit out some games due to playing on international teams in Europe," said Schroyer. "But we were willing to face missing them for a few games to get these outstanding two young men and two outstanding players into our program. The NCAA looks at how much each individual plays with their international team and then makes a determination on how many games each individual must sit out.
"In making the decision to redshirt Afam (Muojeke), we took into consideration that he had twisted his knee the first week of practice, which set him back in his development a little bit. I believe Afam has a very bright future ahead of him at Wyoming, but we felt it was best to give him an opportunity to get healthy and develop physically for a year."
Wyoming's 2007-08 regular-season opener is set for Saturday, Nov. 10 against Colorado-Colorado Springs. The game will tip off at 7 p.m., Mountain Time from Wyoming's Arena-Auditorium.
