On Tuesday night, the Wyoming Cowboy basketball team will play its first road game of the season and will travel to Greeley, Colo. to face the Northern Colorado Bears. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from UNC's Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.
Both Wyoming and Northern Colorado Enter Tuesday's Game with 1-0 Records:
Both the Cowboys and Bears will bring perfect 1-0 records into Tuesday night's game. Each team won their season opener in impressive fashion as the Cowboys beat Kean 92-58 and Northern Colorado beat Tabor College 93-52.
Wyoming and Northern Colorado's Leaders:
In the Pokes season-opening win, four different players scored in double figures including senior Djibril Thiam (18 points), junior Afam Muojeke (14 points), sophomore Amath M'Baye (14 points) and sophomore Desmar Jackson (12 points). Jackson led the Pokes with a career-high eight rebounds.
In Northern Colorado's season opener, the Bears were led by five players who scored in double figures. Guard Devon Beitzel led the way with 17 points and was followed by guard Elliott Lloyd (16), center Taylor Montgomery (11), forward Mike Proctor (11) and guard Paul Garnica (10). Proctor had a double-double, as he added 10 rebounds to his 11 points.
About Northern Colorado:
Tuesday's game marks the 66th meeting between the Wyoming and Northern Colorado. The Cowboys lead the all-time series 49-17 and have won the last 20 meetings, dating back to the 1936-37 season. The Pokes have posted an all-time record of 21-11 in Greeley.
The Bears are coming off of a very good 2009-10 season. Last year, they finished 25-8 overall and 12-4 in the Big Sky Conference, which was good for a second-place finish. They earned a postseason bid and played in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The Bears beat Portland in the opening round of the tournament but fell to Pacific in the second round.
Last season, the Cowboys handed UNC one of their eight losses. The Pokes beat the Bears 76-70 on December 12 in Casper, Wyo. as part of the BlueCross BlueShield of Wyoming Shootout.
Northern Colorado has a new head coach this year in B.J. Hill. Hill was the top assistant coach at UNC over the past four years. This is his first head coaching job.
Tuesday Begins a Stretch of Five Games over Nine Days for the Cowboys:
This begins a busy stretch of games for the Cowboys, as they will play five games over the course of nine days. After Tuesday's game at Northern Colorado, the Pokes will return home to host North Florida on Thurs., Nov. 18 and Western Illinois on Sat., Nov. 20. They will then travel to Cancun, Mexico for games against Missouri and either Providence or La Salle on Tues. and Wed., Nov. 23-24.
Cowboy Joe Club Pre-Game Event:
The Cowboy Joe Club will host a pre-game event prior to tip off between Wyoming and Northern Colorado. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at Pitcher's Brewery and Sports Bar from 5-6:30 p.m. Pitcher's is located at 2501 11th Avenue in Greeley. All Wyoming fans will receive 20 percent off of their bill.
