A busy stretch of games for the Wyoming Cowboy basketball team will continue on Saturday night, as the Pokes will host Western Illinois in their second of two United States based Cancun Challenge games.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium and will conclude a double-header of Cowboy athletics as the football team will host arch-rival Colorado State at 12 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.
Cowboys Look to Rebound after Back-to-Back Losses, Western Illinois is Currently 2-1:
The Cowboys (1-2 overall) will be looking to rebound from tough losses at Northern Colorado (67-53) last Tuesday and against North Florida (76-60) on Thursday night. Western Illinois is currently 2-1 overall. They lost their first game of the season on Thursday night, but gave No. 14/15 Missouri a scare before falling by a score of 66-61 in Columbia, Mo.
Wyoming and Western Illinois' Leaders:
Senior Djibril Thiam has been the Cowboys' top scorer with an 11.0 points per game average through the first three games of the season. Sophomore Brian Gibson leads the Pokes in rebounding and his 6.3 boards a game are currently the sixth most in the Mountain West Conference. JayDee Luster is tied for sixth in the league with 4.0 assists a game.
Western Illinois is led by a dynamic duo of guards in Ceola Clark and Matt Lander, who have combined to average 33.3 points a game this season. Lander is averaging 20.3 points a game and Clark is averaging 13.0. The Leatherneck's leading rebounder is forward Kaimarr Price with 7.0 boards a game. Clark leads the team in assists with 5.3 per night.
About Western Illinois:
Saturday's game will mark the first ever meeting between the Wyoming Cowboys and the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks. Western Illinois returns two starters and nine letterwinners from last season. In 2009-10, the Leathernecks posted a record of 13-17 and a Summit League mark of 6-12.
Western Illinois is coached by Jim Molinari, who is in his third season with the Leathernecks. He is in his 17th season as a head coach and has posted a record of 247-223 (.526) during his career.
Saturday Marks UW's Third Game Over the Past Five Days:
The Cowboys are in the middle of their busiest stretch of games of the season. Saturday's game marks their third game over the past five days. Before it is said and done, the Pokes will play five games over nine days.
The Cowboys began this busy stretch this past Tuesday by traveling to Northern Colorado. After a snow storm forced the team to stay an extra night in Greeley, they returned to action on Thursday night and hosted North Florida. After tonight's game against Western Illinois, the Cowboys will travel to Cancun for the Cancun Challenge. They will face Missouri on Tue., Nov. 23 and then Providence or LaSalle on Wed., Nov. 24.
