LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Saturday will mark the third consecutive season that the Wyoming Cowboys and Southern Illinois Salukis have played each other in basketball. This year's game will tip off at 2:00 p.m., Mountain Time from Wyoming's Arena-Auditorium.
Wyoming brings a 3-2 record into Saturday's contest. UW has already recorded one victory this season over a team that participated in last year's NCAA Tournament, and UW gets a second chance to gain a victory over a 2005 NCAA Tournament participant Saturday versus SIU.
Wyoming defeated Charlotte for third place in the BCA Invitational earlier this season. The Cowboys posted an 87-78 victory over the 49ers on Nov. 15. In the 2004-05 season, Charlotte compiled a 21-8 record and advanced to the First Round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament before losing to North Carolina State, 63-75.
UW's opponent this Saturday is Southern Illinois. The Salukis are 2-3 thus far this season. A year ago, SIU posted a 27-8 record and advanced to the Second Round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament, defeating St. Mary's, 65-56, in the First Round before losing to Oklahoma in the Second Round by a 77-85 score.
The SIU Salukis have won the last four Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championships, and have appeared in the last four NCAA Tournaments.
Wyoming will be led on Saturday by the Mountain West Conference's leading rebounder and shot blocker. Senior Justin Williams leads the Cowboys in scoring (12.5 points per game), rebounding (15.3 rebounds per game) and blocked shots (5.8 blocks per game). He also leads the Mountain West Conference in two of those three categories - rebounding and blocked shots.
Southern Illinois' top performer this season has been junior guard Jamaal Tatum, who is averaging 19.6 points per game.
As always the game will be broadcast on radio by the Cowboy Sports Network. The pregame show will begin one-half hour prior to tip off.
The Cowboys next game will be Monday, Dec. 5 in Laramie against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions.
