LARAMIE, Wyo. -
For the ninth consecutive year, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming Shootout will feature both the Wyoming Cowboy and Cowgirl basketball programs. This year's doubleheader will be played on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, with the Cowgirls facing Texas Woman's University at 1:00 p.m. and the Cowboys hosting Montana State at 3:30. The games will be played in the Casper Events Center in Casper, Wyo.
Over the last 26 consecutive seasons, including this year, the Wyoming Cowboys have enjoyed a great deal of success playing in Casper, Wyo. Since the 1982-83 season, the Cowboys have played annually in Casper. Wyoming has posted a 33-9 (.786) record in Casper games entering this week's contest.
The first year of 1982, the format was a four-team round-robin event. The Cowboy Shootout began the next year (1983) and ran through the 1998 season, the Shootout was a two-day event featuring four men's teams over those 16 years. Beginning in December of 1999, the Shootout format was changed to a one-day event featuring a doubleheader with the Wyoming Cowgirls and Wyoming Cowboys each playing.
The Cowboys will enter this Saturday's game with a 4-3 record. Montana State is 4-4 on the season. UW is coming off its best performance of the season - a 73-64 home win over the Colorado Buffaloes. In that game, Wyoming led by 20 points at halftime, 40-20, and finished with a nine-point win.
Montana State has played a tough non-conference schedule to date. The Bobcats biggest victory was a 95-89 win over Pepperdine in Bozeman, Mont. MSU has also played on the road at UNLV, losing by 11, 65-76; at Fresno State, losing 74-86; and at Nevada, losing by only six, 76-82.
The Cowboys and Bobcats will be renewing their rivalry for the 51st time on Saturday. Wyoming leads the overall series history 41-9. The Cowboys have won the last 13 meetings dating back to Dec. 28, 1992. Of the last 13 meetings, 11 of the 13 have come at neutral sites - either in Casper, Wyo., or Billings, Mont. The last time the two schools didn't play at a neutral site was Dec. 23, 1997, in Laramie, Wyo. That game was won by the Cowboys 60-59.
There is no television coverage of this week's Wyoming Shootout, but the Cowboy Sports Network will broadcast both games on radio. The radio broadcast for the Cowboys and Bobcats will begin one-half hour before tipoff.
