On Friday night, the Wyoming Cowboy basketball team will continue its longest homestand of the season by hosting Western State. The Cowboys and Mountaineers will tip-off at 7 p.m. inside the Arena-Auditorium.
A Look at the Matchup with Western State:
The Cowboys are coming off of a home win over Denver this past Tuesday night that improved their record to 4-6. They have posted a record of 4-1 at home this season.
Wyoming's roster features three players who are averaging double figures in scoring. Sophomore Desmar Jackson leads the team with 13.7 points per game and is followed by senior Djibril Thiam (11.7 ppg) and sophomore Amath M'Baye (11.6 ppg). Jackson has scored in double figures in seven straight games, M'Baye has done so in six straight and Thiam has had 10 or more points in five straight games.
Thiam is the Pokes' leading rebounder with 5.3 per game, while junior JayDee Luster leads the team in assists with 3.4 per game.
Western State has had a tough start to the 2010-11 season and will bring a 1-7 overall record and an 0-4 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference into Friday's game.
The Mountaineers are led by point guard Weylan Towns, who is averaging 13.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists a game. Center Troy McCoy leads Western State in rebounding with 6.6 per contest.
About the Series with Western State:
Wyoming's series with Western State dates all the way back to the 1925-26 season. The Cowboys hold a commanding 23-2 lead in the series and are 15-2 in games played in Laramie. Since 1937, the Cowboys and Mountaineers have played just four times and the Cowboys have won all four (1975, 1994, 2006 in an exhibition and 2008).
Home for Christmas:
The Cowboys will be home for Christmas this season and are in the middle of a five-game homestand. This is the team's longest stretch of home games of the season. They opened the homestand with a win over Denver on Dec. 14. Following Friday's game with Western State, the Pokes will host Centenary (Dec. 20), Wisconsin-Green Bay (Dec. 22) and Kennesaw State (Dec. 28).
