September 26, 1998

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Both sides of the football performed extremely well as the Wyoming Cowboys won their second game of the season on Saturday, a 31-19 conquest of high-powered Louisiana Tech.

The Bulldogs came to War Memorial Stadium as the nations number two passing offense and total offensive team. The Cowboys, who lifted their record to 2-1 on the year, held them 85 yards under their passing average, and 76 under their total offense average.

On the offensive side, Quarterback Jay Stoner was outstanding completing 21 of his 29 attempts for 303 yards and three touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. His favorite target was Tight End Julian Hooker who caught six balls for 107 yards and two touchdowns, one of 51 yards and one of 25 yards. It was his career best day. Receiver Willie King caught the third TD, a 20-yard hook-up with Stoner and running back Marques Brigham added a three-yard touchdown run. Aaron Elling hit on a 31-yard field goal to round out the scoring. For the second straight week the offensive line did not give up a sack, and has given up just one this season.

The Cowboys scored 14 in the first and a touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters to for their biggest point output of the season. The defense, on the other hand, continues to be outstanding, especially in the second half. It has given up just six points in the fourth quarter through three games, and just 13 in the second half.

Wyoming remains home this week to open its Western Athletic Conference schedule against Utah. The Utes come in 3-1, losing their first game of the season last week to Boise State.
