LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Wyomings 12-7 victory over SMU on Saturday belonged to the defense.
The Cowboys held SMU to season lows in total offense, passing, and first downs to totally dominate the Mustangs during Wyoming's 74th Homecoming celebration. It was the 250th game in War Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1950.
The Cowboys allowed SMU to convert on just two of 13 third-down situations, while shutting out the Mustangs in the second half. It was the second time this season the Cowboys have shut out an opponent in the final half. Georgia was the other. Wyoming has now allowed just 16 points in the second half this season. It was also the fourth time this season Wyoming has shut out its opponent in the fourth period.
Sophomore Patrick Chuckwurah led the Cowboy defense from his Bandit position with two-and-a-half sacks, plus a couple of tackles, including one for a loss. He was nominated as Wyomings defensive player of the week.
Offensively the Cowboys managed just one touchdown, a one-yard run by Marques Brigham. Aaron Elling added field goals of 29 and 24 yards for the Pokes total. Brigham rushed for 114 yards, the third time he has rushed for 100 or more this season, and the seventh time for his career.
The Cowboys actually trailed 7-6 at halftime, but produced their touchdown with 9:45 remaining in the third period. They failed on a two-point conversion attempt.
Wyoming takes to the road this week to meet UNLV in Las Vegas for a 5 p.m. MDT contest.
