LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Wyoming utilized a big second quarter to pull away from Rice, on its way to a 34-24 victory, last Saturday at War Memorial Stadium, the Cowboys fifth consecutive, and sixth in seven outings.
In their best second quarter of the season, the Cowboys scored 21 points, clicking on all cylinders offensively, and totally dominating Rices wishbone offense defensively. A 21-yard run by Marques Brigham, and blocked punt and score by Greg Van Leer, and a five-yard pass from quarterback Jay Stoner to receiver Ryan McClendon accounted for the scoring in that period.
Defensively safeties Al Rich and Van Leer were fantastic. Rich finished the day with 10 unassisted tackles, an assist, two tackles for losses and an interception.
Stoner was 19 of 30 for 272 yards and two touchdowns. In addition to his pass to McClendon, Stoner threw a TD to tight end Kirby Drube. His top target was Kofi Shuck who had a career day with six catches for 107 yards.
Running back Marques Brigham continued his sensational run. With 145 yards on 27 carries, Brigham has now rushed for 100 or more yards in four consecutive games, and a total of five this season.
Special teams also were outstanding. In addition to the blocked punt, Cowboy punter Aron Langley averaged 57 yards per kick on three punts. Place kicker Aaron Elling was two for two in the field goal department with successes from 41 and 27 yards. Punt return specialist Jon Jennings also had an excellent day with 42 yards on five returns.
The Cowboys are alone at the top of the WAC Mountain Division standings with a 4-0 mark. They put that record on the line this Saturday when they meet TCU at Ft. Worth, on an ESPN2 telecast. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. MST.
